We’re in Bordeaux, Fr and have discovered Cafe of the Angels. Most  places are closed in the afternoon. We had forgotten that custom. But, lucky for us we found this oasis, with a table looking right out onto the square.

Carol orders a coffee and I a Pastis. I feel at home. And after wandering the back alleys and shops for about an hour since getting off  our floating hotel, the Viking Riverboat “Forsetti,” it feels good to slide into this perch.

The owner is there behind the bar and everyone is friendly and pleasant. I’m practicing my French a little. It’s been a while since being in one of our favorite countries. It holds a special place within our hearts. Fifty years ago we were married in Nice, first by the Mayor, then the Church.

We’re sort of celebrating that day a bit early. It’s only July; but, that’s a good time for a Riverboat Cruise in this area. This one is about wine and chateaus, with lots of wine tasting;but, for now we’re enjoying our view. This is the way to travel as far as

we’re concerned and we love Bordeaux. The bar owner tells us that about 10 years ago Bordeaux had many layers of grime on their buildings. The new mayor set about to clean things up. “Many people now come here,” he remarked.

His words were eschewed in this Wikipedia account… “The city’s nicknames are “La perle d’Aquitaine” (The Pearl of Aquitaine), and “La Belle Endormie” (Sleeping Beauty) in reference to the old center which had black walls due to pollution. Nowadays, this is not the case. In fact, a part of the city, Le Port de La Lune, was almost completely renovated.” The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble” of the 18th century.”

We eventually began to talk about other things. Shortly the conversation turned to issues in the US. “Tell me,” he said, “What is your impression about the gun issues in the US?”

We discussed that for some time and he shares with us that many years before he had thought about having a gun because of the business. He has owned this business for twenty five years. “I came to the decision that it would not be a good idea,” he said. “There would be too many opportunities for things to go wrong. I could never forgive myself if an accident happened or something when not thinking right.”

It never ceases to amaze me how many Europeans watch what is happening in our country. Over the years in Italy, Finland, Belgium, most countries we’ve traveled to people ask questions or bring things up.

We count this as a special part of our visit and look forward to returning.

Le Bistrot des Anges is located at 19 Rue Rode, 33000, Bordeaux, France
